Detailed Biography

Born in 1992, Nuño Fernández Ezquerra holds master’s degree in composition from the Sibelius Academy of Helsinki, studying under the guidance of Lauri Kilpiö (graduating with a 5/5) and a bachelor’s degree in composition from the ESMUC (Barcelona), where he studied under the guidance of Mauricio Sotelo and Agustí Charles (graduating with honours). His studies and carrier have been supported by the Caja de Burgos Foundation (Spain) and the Martin Wegelius Foundation (Finland).

Refusing aesthetic and conceptual shallowness, Nuño Fernández Ezquerra’s works are characterised by a fastidious attention to detail and the quest to create a meaningful and impactful experience to the audience. With a critical and open listening, his musical language has integrated radical elements from other genres such as advanced kinds of electronic music, jazz, post-rock, metal or Japanese Noh theatre, influencing his aesthetics in a veiled, coherent and cohesive way.

His work has been awarded several prizes internationally: being the winner of Protonwerk n.13 (amongst 200 candidates), winner of Duo Signal Call for Scores and Commission 21 (amongst 162 candidates), winner of the National Composition Contest of the Castile and León Symphony Orchestra (2017), winner of the the International Call for Scores & Commission 2017 of the ensemble Suono Giallo and ilSUONO Contemporary Music Week (148 candidates), and receiving the 3rd prize in the contest “Jóvenes Compositores 2014” of the SGAE/CNDM Foundation and an honorable mention in the 3rd Construct Radiate Composition Competition 2020 (amongst 334 candidates).

His pieces have been programmed in numerous festivals internationally, amongst which stand out: regular season of the Castile and León Symphony Orchestra (2018-2019 and 2019-2020) the Klang! Concert Series (Helsinki, Finland, 2019 and 2018), UNM Festival (Bergen, Norway, 2018), the 7th Contemporary Music Concert Series of the BBVA Foundation (Bilbao, Spain, 2016), Festival MIXTUR (Barcelona, Spain, 2017 and 2015), OUT.SIDE 2016 Concert Series (Barcelona, Spain, 2016). He has worked with ensembles such as Uusinta Ensemble, Zagros Ensemble, CrossingLines, Ensemble Suono Giallo, Espai Sonor, Ensemble Temporum, the Black Page Orchestra, Saxtronauts amongst other chamber groups, orchestras and soloists.

He has attended courses, master-classes and seminars with Kaija Saariaho, Raphaël Cendo, Mauro Lanza, José María Sánchez Verdú, Pedro Alcalde, the cellist Anssi Karttunen and the singer Barbara Hannigan, amongst others.
